When the works made on this autumn's Elec-Art course are published on 10 December, there will be three temporary works of art decorating Otakaari 5.

10.12.2015 / 14:00 - 16:00

Media artist Jukka Hautamäki has run the course, on which the expertise of students from ELEC and ARTS was joined and as a result, three works of art were designed for the main building of the School of Electrical Engineering. Each work is visible from outside the building and communicates the activities of the school to the whole campus.

Light vibes, a light art installation in the ceiling of the main entrance to the building, reacts to movement and is intended to communicate the key themes of the School of Electrical Engineering. The artwork, which has been built using fibre optic cable and 3D-printed cases of led lights, forms a network in the ceiling, in which light directed by programmed microcircuits moves delicately in wave-like forms depicting the movement of electromagnetic waves. The work has been designed by Leda Vaneva, Niklas Pöllönen, Tuomas Tissari and Tapio Sintonen. It is sponsored by Teknoware Oy.

Power Plant is a work of light art that is activated by sound. It is 10 metres in height, made of 24 blocks of led lights and climbs along the concrete outside wall of the ELEC acoustics laboratory near the Ossinlampi pond. With its interactivity, this work, inspired by the Virginia creeper vines growing next to it, highlights the professional diversity of the university, the importance of cooperation and multiculturality. It has been designed by Petteri Mäkiniemi, Guy Dowsett, Aku Rouhe and Tea Dickman.

Electropia I is a generative sound and light installation that transforms a bridged corridor at ELEC into a subtle, slowly-evolving audiovisual experience. The title comes from the words ‘electromagnetic’, ‘tropical’ and ‘utopia’: the soundscape and the musical composition are derived from the treated sounds of electromagnetic waves and a neotropical rainforest, while ‘utopia’ refers to a possible place, condition or ideal. The light consists of several small strobe lights reacting sporadically to the soundscape, their altered light reflected discreetly around the architecture of the corridor. The installation is designed by Ilpo Jauhiainen, Matias Tuohino, Niklas Sallinen and Roupen Bastadjian.

The opening ceremony will be held on Thursday 10 December 2015 from 14.00 to 16.00 at Otakaari 5A. Welcome!
